The Victorian Goldfield Railway runs an historic train ride with luxurious first class rail travel recreating the golden age of rail.
Themed trains include Ales on Rails craft beer tasting on board train and “Murder on the Orient Express” on board movie train

Be whirled away into the past– hear the powerful whistle echoing across the Goldfields and smell the smoke wafting through the air as you enjoy the sights and sounds of the magnificent steam locomotive in action.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway runs regular steam trains along the branch line from Maldon to Castlemaine and return every Sunday and Wednesday - see the website for up to date timetables and special events.

Opened in 1884 this is the last remaining fully operational branch line built to open up rural Victoria in the late 19th century.

Enjoy a family day out or treat yourself and travel in our elegant first class carriages as your train takes you through the central Victorian Goldfields

Great family fun. Take the kids for a memorable ride. Watch the world go by from your family compartment. Listen to the whistle blow as you lean out the window and maybe spot a kangaroo or two. Special family tickets are available on all our trains.

For a touch of class, step back in time to an era of elegance and decadence to the Golden Age of rail when the journey was as important as the destination. Ride in Edwardian splendour or art deco style in our two first class carriages which offer a unique rail experience. Sit back, enjoy a drink from our fully equipped bar. Ride on the observation platform on the parlour car.

You can even ride with the driver. Get up close and personal and experience the thrill of travelling on the footplate with the driver and see why steam trains captivate the imagination of everyone, no matter their age – the sights, smells and sounds of a locomotive hard at work. (This must be prebooked)

On days of Total Fire Ban in the North Central Zone, no VGR trains will operate. On days declared ‘Severe’ (but not Total Fire Ban), a diesel locomotive or Rail Motor will substitute for steam. Diesel power will also substitute if steam is temporarily unavailable on any scheduled day.
